2023 CONFERENCE & 35th ANNIVERSARY GALA

A reason to celebrate

In November we hosted our largest conference to date, and took the opportunity to celebrate the   BCACC’s 35th anniversary.

The BCACC 2023 conference, titled “Counselling in a Changing World: Re-imagining our Environments,” was held at the Hyatt in Vancouver, BC on November 3 and 4, 2023.

This event marked a significant milestone for BCACC, as it became the largest conference we have hosted to date.

Attendance

The conference drew over 500 mental health professionals from across the province. Additionally, 200 registrants participated virtually, emphasizing the widespread interest and engagement.

Featured Workshop

Dr. Sue Johnson, clinical psychologist, couples therapist and author, conducted an in-person workshop titled
 “Belonging Leads to Becoming: The Alliance in Emotionally Focused Individual Therapy (EFIT).” Her insights and practical guidance on building the therapeutic relationship with clients set the tone for the conference to come.

Workshops and Breakout Sessions

Delegates had the privilege of attending six workshops and selecting from 15 breakout sessions over the course of the two-day event. These sessions covered a diverse range of topics, fostering professional growth and knowledge exchange.

Elder Bob Barker provided the Indigenous welcome and opened the conference.

Sarah Kennell from the CMHA National delivered the opening address, Where’s my Mental Health Care?”

Samuel Breaum, Manager of Access to Quality Mental Health Services at the Mental Health Commission of Canada, shared valuable insights at a lunchtime presentation.

The conference concluded with a closing speech by the Honourable Jennifer Whiteside, Minister of Mental Health and Addictions, emphasizing the importance of mental health advocacy and support and thanking BCACC members for the important part they play in the landscape of mental health in BC.

BCACC’s 35th Anniversary Gala

We celebrated our 35th anniversary of service in 2023 with a special gala event that took place the evening of November 3rd, 2023.  The Gala was an elegant evening with award recognitions, speeches, dinner and a private concert by Vancouver artist, Frazey Ford.

The BCACC awarded its first honourary membership to Jonathan Morris, CEO of the CMHA BC, as well as recognized recipients of the Joan Campbell Award for 2023.
