PRESIDENT & CEO MESSAGE

Over the last year, the BC Association of Clinical Counsellors has made great progress both on its regulatory as well as its association mandates. The BCACC is very grateful for its dedicated volunteers and staff, and its supportive partners and collaborators.

Through their efforts and contributions, the BCACC has achieved many of its strategic goals, including:

$

Adding 900 new master’s level Registered Clinical Counsellors (RCCs) to the profession, now totaling 7200 BCACC registrants;

$

Supporting 100,000+ members of the public seeking mental health services through BCACC’s Find a Counsellor Tool;

$

Advocating for the addition of RCCs to more employee benefit plans to increase provision and lower the costs of mental health services;

$

Collaborating with the Ministry of Health to submit an application for designation of the profession under the Health Professions Act;

$

Contributing to multiple Ministry of Mental Health & Addictions and Ministry of Health panels to inform and enhance the provision of publicly funded mental health services in BC.

Data from Mental Health Research Canada’s (MHRC) latest research indicates that:

$

More than 1 in 2 people (52%) are struggling with their mental health and aren’t getting the help they need.

$

1 in 8 Canadians have been experiencing high levels of anxiety. Those indicating feeling high anxiety were 7% just before the pandemic and 11% now. 1 in 4 Canadians will receive a lifetime diagnosis of anxiety.

$

15% of Canadians have accessed mental health services in the last year, an additional 6% believe they should but are not.

$

33% of employed Canadians are burned out. In some professions, however, it is much higher (e.g., 66% of nurses).

In the past year, the BCACC has worked to ensure that there is an ample number of practitioners to meet the ever-growing need for mental health services in British Columbia, and that the quality of care is maintained.

The BCACC will continue to strive for a future where access to mental health becomes universal and commonplace.
