Public service and education

Helping people to navigate their mental health concerns

In the past year the BCACC engaged in multiple activities to educate the public on various aspects of mental health and continued with its advocacy for improved public access to mental health services.

Public Referrals

Up to 125,000 members of the public utilize the BCACC’s Find a Counsellor tool annually to secure the services of a Clinical Counselor.  Based on the public’s and other stakeholders’ feedback the Find a Counsellor tool continues to be enhanced to improve usability and new features are being added.

Public Support

Providing tools for managing dental anxiety.

The BCACC and the BC Dental Hygienists Association continued their collaboration on the creation/update of practice tools and a website to alleviate anxiety and better prepare the public for their oral care visits.

Collaboration amplifies impact

Municipal Employees Support

The BCACC and the BC Municipal Safety Association continued their collaboration on a pre-emptive (up-stream) program (Connection 2 Care) to provide anonymous mental health services to municipal employees by phone.  This addresses the stigma associated with seeking mental health support.

Stakeholders and Rights Holders Engagement

Engaging in honest conversations

The BCACC met with several mental health stakeholders and rights holders in Prince George, Kelowna, Burnaby and Victoria to continue to advocate for the enhanced provision of mental health services as well as gather firsthand information to inform its programming.

Public Education

Last year, our focus on supporting members through significant changes meant we offered just two Matters of the Mind public presentations, which still drew over 350 registrants. Importantly, we succeeded in shifting our audience, with over 40% of viewers now coming from the general public rather than exclusively from our RCC membership.

By showcasing RCC expertise directly to the community, these sessions foster timely, accessible mental health conversations and help connect the public with trusted counselling professionals. We look forward to expanding our RCC-led webinars in 2025 to further support mental health across BC. In addition to the ones delivered in 2024, the BCACC offered the following workshops for the public:

Strategies for Caregivers Supporting a Child with Anxiety

10 strategies that are informed by evidence based intervention with an emphasis on Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) techniques.
